All set and ready to EVERYTHING is ready for carnival day next week, Bank Holiday Monday, 5 May. The arena entertainment is all planned, more than 70 stalls and sideshows have booked, the funfair is preparing to travel and final touches are being made to some impressive entries for the procession. We just need the crowds to turn up and enjoy a marvellous day out at Chobham Recreation Ground! The showground gates open and the funfair starts operating at 11am. The arena events start at around 12.50pm and continue to around 5pm, with two performances of the main acts. The main attraction is a unique spectacle – camel racing, staged by a company that has been thrilling audiences around the UK for decades. You will be cheering Joseph’s Amazing Camels and their jockeys, competing in a sport that is huge in the Middle East. As well as racing, the camels will be on display so that the public can meet the splendid animals and learn more about them. The entertainment also includes displays by Prime Acrobatics and SV Elite Dance Studios, a judo demonstration by Core Judo Academy, performances by St Lawrence School maypole dancers, the Rock Choir and Chobham Morris, and a traditional Punch and Judy show. Entry to the showground is free but we accept donations on the gates to cover expenditure and top up our good causes fund. There will be card readers for electronic donations on at least two gates but please bring cash to support the stallholders who cannot accept cards. The carnival programme can be viewed and also downloaded as a PDF – click on the link to go to the programme page. The theme for the carnival parade is Space, and some highly creative entries involving aliens, astronauts, planets and spaceships are expected. The procession sets off from Chobham Rugby Club in Windsor Road at 11.30am and arrives at the recreation ground at about 12.10pm. It can be safely viewed in Windsor Road, High Street and Station Road. Parade entries will be accepted up to Friday, 2 May – download an application form from this page. Extra parking will be available in the village on carnival day, at Broadford in Castle Grove Road, Chobham Adventure Farm in Bagshot Road and Chobham Community Centre in Windsor Road. There will be limited disabled-permit parking in the recreation ground. Click the link to see the parking locations map. The Broadford parking might not be available if there has been continuing rain in the lead-up to carnival day. Visit our Facebook page on the day for parking updates.
